The much awaited movie by Arun Kumar Aravind is finally here. Though the movie "Ee Adutha Kaalathu" literally means 'in recent times' it took almost a year in making and will hit the screens Friday.
Director Arun Kumar, considered as a trend-setter in Malayalam film industry with his no-hero-no-villain directorial debut, Cocktail, is confident that his latest venture will also be well received.
A story with a slice-of-life theme, the movie travels through different genres and has a panorama of different emotions - it has suspense, thrill, action, horror, etc, which excites almost all human emotions. Distancing from the regular story-telling pattern, the movie has done away with all sorts of typecasts who are usually marked as a hero, a heroine or a villain.
So why did he take so long to come up with EAK? "My last film, Cocktail, was an adaptation from a Canadian movie. Though it was challenging for me to do and to churn it out well to the taste of Malayali audience, this time I wanted to come up with a fresh subject, which can stand out and speak for itself. So when Murali Gopi presented the one-liner it excited me to the core. We worked on shaping it out well and meticulously perfect. That took some time and I am satisfied with the way it has evolved.
What's so unique about EAK? "The Malayali society has undergone a sea-change over a short period of time. People are well-versed with all advancements that is taking place in the world. From nano car to Jaguar, from smart phones to space tourism, the general public here has now kept apace with all the changes around. So it's obviously incongruent that the entertainment sector, especially Malayalam cinema, be left lurching in the old rudimentary form. They would welcome any change in this field if art is not maligned. That's why I hope EAK will be accepted"
"We have seen so many movies which tell stories of a city, a town or a village, but this one is a tale that a city has to narrate," says Arun Kumar.
Produced by Raju Malliath, Ee Adutha Kaaathu is scripted by Murali Gopi, son of late actor Bharat Gopi. Gopi Sunder composed music for lyrics penned by Rafeeq Ahmed. Shehnad Jalal has wielded the camera and Arun Kumar is at the helm of the editing department.
The film casts Indrajith Sukumaran, Murali Gopi, Anoop Menon, Nishan and Mythili in prominent roles.
